The simpler way to book a car in Cape Verde

Elos brings local rent-a-cars, accepted one by one, into one booking experience. Instead of messaging several agencies, see availability, the itemised total price and each company's conditions before you book.

Before you book

One island, one car

In Cape Verde the islands are linked by plane and ferry, and rental companies work island by island. The car you pick up stays on the island where you picked it up.

Plan a multi-island trip
  • The car stays on its island

It doesn't board the ferry or the plane: you return it on the same island where you collected it.

  • Two islands, two rentals

If you're visiting two or three islands, you rent on each one. Pick-up is usually at the airport or the port where you arrive.

  • Dates leg by leg

Plan your dates leg by leg, so the car is only booked for the days you're actually on that island.

Where to rent a car in Cape Verde

Each island works differently. On resort islands, a car helps you explore beyond fixed tours. On larger islands, it gives freedom to combine beaches, towns and mountain areas.

Sal Island

Sal

Sal Island

Useful for Santa Maria, Espargos, Pedra de Lume, Kite Beach and airport-to-resort transfers.

Santiago and Praia

Santiago

Santiago and Praia

The most complete island to explore by car: Praia, Cidade Velha, Assomada, Serra Malagueta and Tarrafal.

Fogo Island

Fogo

Fogo Island

For São Filipe, the climb up to Chã das Caldeiras and the coffee and wine country; the mountain road takes its time.

Santo Antão

Santo Antão

Santo Antão

Reached by ferry from São Vicente; the Paul and Ribeira Grande valleys, with winding roads and viewpoints.

São Nicolau

São Nicolau

São Nicolau

Tarrafal and Ribeira Brava, mountains and quiet: an island to take slowly.

Maio

Maio

Maio

A small, flat island with empty beaches and very little traffic, easy to drive end to end.

Brava

Brava

Brava

The smallest and greenest island, reached by boat from Fogo.

Which car should you choose in Cape Verde?

Not every trip needs an SUV. The right choice depends on the island, itinerary and luggage.

  • Economy or compact

Good for cities, hotels, airports and main roads in Sal, Praia, Mindelo and Santa Maria.

  • SUV

More comfortable for mountain roads, dirt access, families, luggage or remote beaches.

  • Automatic

Useful if you want easier driving on hills, urban traffic and longer days.

Driving in Cape Verde

Nothing difficult, but a few local details change the pace of a trip. Allow more time than the map suggests.

  • Roads and cobblestones

Many roads are paved with Portuguese cobblestones. You drive slowly, and journeys take longer than the distance suggests.

  • Mountain roads

On Fogo and Santo Antão the roads are narrow and full of bends. A car with decent ground clearance helps, and there's no rushing.

  • Fuel

There are stations in the towns and near the airports; outside them they're further apart, so fill up before a long drive.

  • Parking

In smaller towns you mostly park on the street, free of charge. In central Praia and Mindelo, spaces fill up early.

  • After dark

Outside the towns there's little lighting and animals wander onto the road. If you can, do the long drives in daylight.

Documents, deposit and payment

Before booking, check required documents, deposit policy, fuel rules, mileage and pickup location.

  • Driving licence

Bring a valid driving licence and ID. Some companies may require minimum age or driving experience.

  • Deposit

When the company asks for a deposit, you pay it at pickup and get it back at the end if the car returns with no new damage. The amount and how to pay are on each car's page.

  • Total price

The daily price and the booking total are itemised before you book, including dates, times, extras and any delivery fees.

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Cape Verde

Is it worth renting a car in Cape Verde?

Yes, especially if you want to explore beyond resorts, visit beaches on your own schedule or combine several stops in one day.

Do I need an SUV in Cape Verde?

Not always. Economy or compact cars suit cities and main roads. For dirt access, mountains, remote beaches or luggage, an SUV is better.

Can I pick up the car at the airport?

On several islands, yes. Availability depends on the rental company and vehicle. Elos shows airport and town options when active partners are available.

Is the displayed price final?

Elos shows the booking price based on selected dates, times and vehicle. Extras, special delivery or conditions appear before confirmation.

What documents do I need?

Usually a valid driving licence and ID. Some companies may apply age, deposit or minimum driving-experience rules.

Should I book before arrival?

Yes. In high-demand periods, booking early helps secure model, price and pickup point, especially in Sal, Santiago and Boa Vista.
