Brava is the smallest inhabited island of Cape Verde and the most isolated — with no active commercial airport, it is reached only by ferry from Fogo, a roughly one-hour crossing. Known as the 'island of flowers' thanks to its relative humidity and lush highland vegetation, Brava is a refuge for travellers seeking total quiet and the kind of green landscapes rare elsewhere in Cape Verde. The capital, Nova Sintra, sits at 520m altitude and was named by Portuguese settlers in honour of Portugal's Sintra because of its cool microclimate — it has traditional architecture, gardens, a charming central square and morning mist. Faja d'Água, on the western coast, is a small fishing harbour wedged between cliffs, with natural rock pools and the island's best swimming spot. Brava is also the birthplace of Eugénio Tavares, Cape Verde's national poet. Two days are enough to see the essentials. Roads are few and narrow but paved on the main routes — long daily drives are not on the cards.

- Only by ferry, from Vale dos Cavaleiros harbour (Fogo) to Furna (Brava). The crossing takes about 1 hour and runs daily, although it can be cancelled in rough seas. There are no regular commercial flights.
- Yes, if you want independence. Brava is small (around 64 km²) but has big elevation changes — Furna at sea level, Nova Sintra at 520m, Faja d'Água tucked away on the west coast. Shared taxis exist but are limited. With a car you can do the loop in half a day.
- A standard car with enough engine power for climbs. The main roads (Furna → Nova Sintra → Faja d'Água) are paved but narrow with tight bends. A 4x4 is not necessary.
- With 2 days and 1 night you see the essentials: Nova Sintra, Faja d'Água, Lavadura and the Eugénio Tavares house-museum. Hikers and travellers who really want to disconnect will enjoy 3 to 4 days.
