Santo Antão is the most mountainous and lush island of Cape Verde, a paradise for travellers who love dramatic landscapes and hiking. There is no active commercial airport — the island is reached by ferry from Mindelo (São Vicente) to Porto Novo, a roughly 50-minute crossing. From there a car opens up the highlights: the viewpoint at Cova de Paúl, an extinct volcanic crater turned into terraced farmland; Paúl Valley, a green gorge of banana trees, sugarcane and trapiches where artisan grogue is distilled; the colonial town of Ribeira Grande (Povoação); and Ponta do Sol on the northern tip. The famous old cobblestone road linking Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande over Cova is one of Africa's most spectacular drives, but its hairpin bends and sheer drops demand careful driving. The newer paved southern road is faster and safer, especially for less experienced drivers.

Everything you need to know about renting a car in Santo Antão
- The only way is by ferry from Mindelo (São Vicente) to Porto Novo. The crossing takes around 50 minutes and Naviera Armas runs several daily connections. The rental car is picked up in Porto Novo right at arrival.
- It is technically possible to ship cars across, but expensive and logistically complicated. It is far more practical to rent directly in Porto Novo, on Santo Antão, and return there.
- For most paved roads (south, Ribeira Grande, Paúl, Ponta do Sol) a standard car with a good clutch is enough. If you plan to use the old cobblestone road over Cova, or rural tracks to Chã de Igreja, an SUV is recommended. Climbs are long — avoid underpowered cars.
- Minimum 2 days and 1 night to feel the island. Ideally 3 to 4 days if you want to combine hikes (Cova → Paúl, Ponta do Sol → Cruzinha) with visits to grogue distilleries and Ribeira Grande.
