From booking to return: documents, the deposit, changing and cancelling, and the money that comes back. It is part of the Terms and Conditions.
In short
- You cancel at no cost up to the company's deadline. After that, the company keeps its fee, and you never pay more than you already paid online.
- The deposit is held when you pick up the car and comes back at the end, minus anything you owe.
- Return the car at the agreed time and with the fuel level shown. If you go past the few minutes of leeway, you pay one more day.
- The car stays on the island where you picked it up.
- If the car is not available, the company offers you another one, on the terms shown on the car's page. If you do not accept it, we refund what you paid online.
1. The booking
The booking is confirmed when the online payment goes through, and you receive an email with the company's rules. Some companies reply to each request first, within 2 hours while their counter is open. If the company accepts, you get a link to pay, with up to 6 hours to do it. If not, or if it doesn't reply in time, you pay nothing. While you wait for the answer, the car is not held.
If you do not pay by the time shown before you pay, the booking ends on its own and the car is free again.
2. Documents and pick-up
At pick-up, show:
- your original driving licence, valid until the end of the rental;
- an ID document with a photo, such as an identity card or a passport.
If the licence is written in another alphabet (for example, Arabic or Chinese), also bring an international driving permit. Only the people on the booking can drive. Other drivers only if the company agrees.
3. Deposit
The deposit is an amount the company holds while you have the car. The amount is on the car's page and in the contract, and you pay it at pick-up.
It comes back at the end of the rental, minus anything you owe. That can be: new damage, missing fuel, late return and any part of the rental still unpaid. For damage, the amount deducted does not exceed the deposit, except in the cases in section 3 of the Liability and Damage policy.
4. Fuel and late returns
Fuel follows the company's rule, shown on the car's page. Without a rule, return the car with the fuel level it had at pick-up.
Return the car at the agreed time. The company gives a few minutes of leeway (usually 59 minutes). After that, you pay one more day.
The company may also charge for unusual cleaning, delivery to another place on the island and the work of handling fines and tolls. The car stays on the island where you picked it up: you cannot take it by boat or by plane.
5. Changing the booking
You can change the dates and times in your account or from the booking link. You can do it until the end of the free-cancellation deadline, if the car is free. To change car or location, cancel and book again, or talk to the company.
6. Cancelling
You cancel in your account, under “My bookings”, or from the booking link, up to the pick-up time. The deadline to cancel at no cost is set by each company, and you see it before you pay.
- Up to the deadline: you cancel at no cost, and what you paid comes back in full.
- After the deadline: the company keeps its cancellation fee, a percentage of the total, and the rest comes back. You never pay more than you already paid online. If you only paid the down payment and the fee is higher, the company keeps the down payment and charges you nothing more. If the company has no fee, you cancel at no cost up to pick-up.
- If you booked when the deadline had already passed: you have 1 hour from booking to cancel at no cost.
- If the company cancels: there is no fee, and what you paid comes back in full.
- If you have not paid yet, you do not need to cancel: without the payment, the booking ends on its own at the time you saw before paying.
Before you confirm the cancellation, you see the fee and what comes back. Once the pick-up time has passed, talk to the company.
7. The money that comes back
What you paid online goes back to the card you paid with, once Elos has checked it. How long it takes depends on your bank. If you have an Elos account, you can choose to receive it as Elos credit, for a future booking. If the bank refuses, we pay it back by transfer.
What you paid the company at the counter is refunded by the company. Any credits the booking used go back to your balance.
8. If you do not show up
If you neither pick up the car nor cancel, the company may record a no-show after the pick-up time. It counts as a cancellation after the deadline: the company keeps the fee, and the rest comes back.
9. If the car is not available
Keeping the car legal, with its documents up to date, is the company's job. If the car is not available, the company offers you another one, on the terms shown on the car's page. If you do not accept it, we refund what you paid online.
This document is about using the Elos website. The car rental is a contract between you and the company you choose.
