Sao Filipe is the second oldest city in Cape Verde and the capital of Fogo island. It clings to a cliff facing west, with a privileged view across to neighbouring Brava at sunset. The historic centre preserves the sobrados, Portuguese colonial houses from the 18th and 19th centuries with wooden balconies, some now converted into guesthouses. The main square, with the parish church, is the heart of daily life. Sao Filipe airport (SFL) handles domestic flights from Praia. From Sao Filipe you drive up to Cha das Caldeiras (1,700 m, inside the Pico do Fogo crater) — 35 km of mountain road with constant curves and rapid altitude gain. The local Manecom wine and the Cha cheese can be bought directly from producers. A car with a strong engine is recommended.
